KS2 Redhills Workhouse

Children learn to look carefully at clues in their neighbourhood, and uncover some of their local geography and history. They investigate changes over the last century or so using fieldwork and original, local sources reproduced on this site. The resource was devised by two experienced primary school teachers.

Is your school in one of the parishes below? Open the resource to uncover lives of the poor, disabled and out-of-luck locals in your parish who were sent to the St Thomas Union Workhouse... It served all the parishes of the medieval administrative district know as the 'Hundred of Exminster':

Alphington, Ashcombe, Ashton, Aylesbeare, Bicton, Brampford Speke, Bridford, Broadclyst, Christow, Clyst St George, Clyst St Lawrence, Clyst St Mary, Clysthydon, Colaton Raleigh, Doddiscombleigh, Dotton, Dunchideock, Dunsford, East Budleigh, Exminster, Farringdon, Heavitree, Holcombe Burnell, Honiton Clyst, Huxham, Ide, Kenn, Kenton, Littleham, Lympstone, Mamhead, Netherexe, Otterton, Pinhoe, Poltimore, Powderham, Rewe, Rockbeare, Shillingford St George, Sowton, St Leonard, St Thomas, Stoke Canon, Tedburn St Mary, Topsham, Upton Pyne, Whimple, Whitstone, Withycombe Raleigh, and Woodbury.
