Memories of the Blitz

Barton Road and Shaftsbuty Road, St Thomas

Plane crash in Barton Road
By Brenda

My father used to be a warden and he used to be out walking the streets rather than stay in a shelter. One night a plane came down in Barton Road.  We lived at the top of Shaftesbury Road, quite near.  Great big boulders were thrown up and there was a huge crater in the road.  It must have been quite an explosion.  I was about six years old.  I came downstairs and there was a great big boulder in the hall of our house.  We had some ceilings to mend, obviously.

It's funny I don't remember hearing anything in the night.  We grew up with the war.  You just got used to it somehow.  We used to sing "Ten green bottles" down below when we were in the shelter.  That was at school.

Comments/reviews:

I thought it was interesting to know what it was like for people to live during the Blitz.
