South West Water

A leather case comes to light
By Sarah, Curator of West Exe

This old leather bag once belonged to the St Thomas Poor Union and Workhouse. It's quite big and made to last. A brass tag is marked 'St Thomas Union A Division'. It was probably for legal documents. I wonder who owned and used such an offical looking case? Its history is a mystery!

The empty case came to light in the offices of South West Water, Rydon Lane, Exeter. Chris Martin, Library Assistant at South West Water contacted RAMM about the case. They have since donated it to the RAMM costume collection.

The St Thomas workhouse served some fifty parishes across a wide area.
