The Portable Antiquities Scheme
By Sarah, Curator of West Exe
People sometimes find small archaeological objects such as coins when they are out walking the dog, or even searching with metal detectors.
One of the people who works at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter is the Finds Liaison Officer. Her name is Danielle. She says: "My job is to meet people who have found archaeological objects which were made a long time ago. I can help you understand what the finds are and make sure they are properly recorded."
Each tiny object is a piece in the much bigger jigsaw of the ancient landscape. These small finds are very useful clues which help build up a picture of life in the past, but only if they are carefully recorded.
If you have found something like this please get in touch with Danielle. You can contact her at RAMM on 01392 665983 or by e-mail danielle.wootton@exeter.gov.uk. You can also find out more on the Portable Antiquities Scheme website: Finds.
There are some fun children's activities on the Finds site too.
