One way traffic in Cowick Street

Traffic chaos in Cowick Street in 1984

Renewing the utilities in 1984
By Michael

I remember in 1984 when we first moved to Dunsford Hill (as everybody down here calls it; it's Dunsford Road on the map!) and part of Cowick Street was dug up. They were renewing the sewers I think. It was one way traffic down most of Cowick Street. Where we were previously living at Redhills was still two way traffic and we wondered why on earth we'd moved here. It was quite chaotic.

All the traffic was coming down Buddle Lane. I think the traffic went into the city along Cowick St and coming out you had to go up Okehampton Street and Road, then into Buddle Lane and along that way. As you came in the people trying to get up to Redhills were mixed in with the traffic trying to get out to St Thomas. It was probably only for two months but it seemed never ending.  It was in the winter as well. It was about February time when the work started.
