"Natural Reflections" Winter

The Exeter Canal
By Rowena Jay
Photo:" 'Natural Reflections' Winter Reflections" – It was not just the really deep blue coloration in this photograph that I loved but the wonderful architectural shape of the bare Oak tree.
Photo:" 'Natural Reflections' Red Willows" – The title says it all. It was the beautiful deep colour of the bare Willow trees bathed in the early morning sunlight reflecting on the pale blue/grey of the canal waters that made this photograph.
Photo:" 'Natural Reflections' Icy Sunrise" – Another photograph capturing a very cold winters morning. The sun that was just peeping over a heavy grey cloud was reflecting beautifully on the frozen surface of the canal water.
Photo:" 'Natural Reflections' Tree and Clouds" – The dark tree and canal-side vegetation provided a very strong wintery reflection, while the soft white clouds gave a rippling-effect to their reflections in the water.
Photo:" 'Natural Reflections' Winter Mist" – The mist gave this photograph real atmosphere. The very dark, bare trees were a good contrast against the pastel colours of the early-morning sky all reflecting in the water.
Photo:" 'Natural Reflections' Misty Morn" – The reflecting trees gave a good back ground and the mist just rolling off the water onto the banks added atmosphere to the photograph. The real beauty was in the reflecting clouds, which made the picture look as if it had been painted in oils.
Photo:" 'Natural Reflections' Winter Sunrise" – The strong red and gold colours in this sunrise were incredible and reflected beautifully in the canal. The dark trees and vegetation provided a good contrast against the bright colours.
Photo:" 'Natural Reflections' Icy Reflections" – The banks of the canal were heavy with frost and it was so cold that the canal itself had completely frozen over. The sun was trying to find a way through the leaden-grey skies and the black trees and vegetation added to cold wintery feel. I still managed to find excellent reflections, this time in the ice.

My work on my photographic "Natural Reflections" theme is mainly carried out in the very early hours of the morning. At this time of day the water of the Exeter Canal is very calm and at its most "mirror like" producing the most wonderful "Natural Reflections". The captions that I have written with each photograph describe the beauty that I saw in each scene and why I took the picture.
