Bringing local memories to life
By Sarah, Curator of West Exe

Two curators from the Royal Albert Memorial Museum enjoyed conversations with elders from the West Exe Day Service in 2008 and 2009. Madie, one of Age Concern's volunteers, joined us too. She has a real gift for getting us going. Even people in the group with quite severe memory loss had interesting tales to tell once we all got chatting.

Some of the memories we shared round a table in the cafe are now on this website. By recalling their earlier lives in this way the group are helping to make history for the future. Some memories are written and some are sound recordings edited by Dan Cray.

These are views of an older generation. A small amount of the language they use sounds a bit uncomfortable today but it is also interesting to show how views change.

To find these memories go into the 'West-Side Stories' part of this site from the main menu, or use the links below:

John's memories of India

Ron's memories of peace and war

Doris encounters a spitfire

Norman's ups and downs

GIs, ballroom dancing and segregation

Devon cider

Doris and Win remember comptometers
