Lesson A1: Investigating maps and aerial photographs.

If you have a digital projector but no electronic whiteboard you could project this page screen onto an ordinary white board, or even onto a flip chart, and then use coloured pens to draw round shapes on the maps as you open them.
When you open the first, most recent map you can choose map, aerial photograph or a hybrid of the two and zoom in or out. It will return to the default setting when you leave the page. You can't zoom or move around the historic maps.
Begin at the present day and work back. Locate key features - school, river, railway, flood plains, housing, workhouse. Investigate what stays the same and what changes as you go back to the earlier maps.
Tasks:
1. What do you notice about the shape of buildings, layouts and area around the school.
2. Where are the buildings in relation to the river and the railway?
3. Can we find the hexagon / wheel shaped building on the present day map and aerial photograph?
