Clcik to open the modern day interactive map (above left). Identify the river and other features that pupils can pick out - houses, railway, school, cemetery, allotments, football pitches, flood plain? Look at layout and landmarks.
Then open the two older maps from 1904 and 1840 in turn. Discuss differences/similarities as you go back in time.
Task: Everyone to produce a two column chart entitled 'Now and Then'
NOW THEN
More able pupils to work on acetate overlays of maps to identify differences and similarities. Have a photocopy of the earliest map with an acetate overlay and ask children to plot the present day key landmarks onto the acetate.
Plenary session - Children to discuss what they have plotted with the rest of the class. Discuss.
