Artist Margaret Abercrombie made this set of drawings out and about in St Thomas in spring 2008. Her interest in architecture goes back to conversations with her father when she was a girl in the 1920s and 30s. Later she studied fine art at the Hornsey School of Art in London. Abercrombie has always enjoyed making drawings on location rather than working from photographs, particularly when she lived in Italy for several years.
"Cowick Street is a place of special architectural and historical interest which was designated a Conservation Area by the City Council in 1986. It is an important area of historic townscape which contains numerous listed and locally listed buildings, attractive open space and mature trees."
Cowick Street Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan, Exeter City Council Planning Services, November 2004
