Award - heritage strengthens communities

Heritage has the power to bring people together across the generations and share their stories. And there's nothing like a cob-building tradition with a twist to get people talking.

New storytelling house at West Exe Children's Centre

Official opening on Wednesday 25 June 2008
By Exeter City Council

An exciting new storytelling house at a children's centre officially opens on Wednesday 25 June at 2pm.

The traditional cob building results from 18 months collaboration between the West Exe Childrens' Centre, which is run by Devon County Council, and the Royal Albert Memorial Museum's Living Here project.

Guided by the City Council run Museum, parents and children were intimately involved in the design and construction, drawing inspiration from nearby buildings, local history and the Museum's collections. The building will be a centre for story telling, helping the young children develop language and communication skills.

A wonderful tale of cooperation

Officially opening the storytelling house will be Cllr Rob Hannaford, Exeter City Council's Lead Councillor for Housing and Social Inclusion. He said: "It is so appropriate that the Children's Centre Storytelling House should start with a wonderful tale of cooperation. The enthusiasm of the children and parents, their hard work helping with construction, the dedication of the centre's staff and thoughtful guidance from our Museum have combined to give the centre this wonderful resource. Inspired by its locality, it will in turn give inspiration to those who follow. Not just the home for story telling, I'm sure it will also be the source of many a tale, of many a joyful story that will enrich the whole community."

Devon County Council Executive Member for Children's Services, Cllr John Smith, said: "I welcome this exciting addition to the facilities. It will provide an entertaining feature for all those who use this popular centre."

The opening at the West Exe Children's Centre in Cowick Street, will be attended by centre users, partners and supporters.
