Caroline Sarah Chamberlain of Alphington

A mystery portrait - can you help?
By Kate Herrick

I am writing on behalf of Lawrence House Museum, Launceston, Cornwall and hope that you may be able to assist us with some research. The museum is in possession of two portraits of, we think, a former Mayor of Launceston and his wife who we believe may have connections with Alphington.

The people concerned are Edward and Caroline Sarah CHAMBERLAIN.

A note on the back of Caroline's portrait states "Caroline Sarah Chamberlain Died October 1848 aged 52 Buried at Alphington."

Edward's portrait is marked: "Portrait of my Uncle Edward Chamberlain Painted by ......... [unreadable] a Local Artist at Exeter and considered one of his best efforts. Presented to his[?] Nephew JNH Smith-Pierce by his Aunt Mary AE Smith. UNCLE EDWARD CHAMBERLAIN Died February 18-4" [18 February 1904?]

The Smith-Pearses were former owners of Lawrence House,  Launceston.

I wonder if anyone throw any further light on the Chamberlains?

Sarah, Curator of West Exe adds:

Can you help Launceston Museum with this mystery? if you have some information, however slight, please contact the museum directly at Lawrence House. 9 Castle Street, Launceston, Cornwall PL15 8BA

I know nothing about the Chamberlains but just wanted to point out that in Chudleigh Road, on the corner of Ide Lane, the terrace of brick houses are called Caroline Place. I just wondered if there is any connection?
