Trail launch
Visitor and locals alike will be able learn more about St Thomas' rich history with the a new trail leaflet, which was officially launched on 7 November 2008 at St Thomas Library, Exeter. Following the launch, free copies are now available from the library and have been delivered to local homes.
Fascinating local landmarks
The new printed guide takes walkers of all abilities along a 2 mile circular route passing a wide variety of fascinating local landmarks. Devised by local historian Christine Trigger, it includes delightful line drawings by another local, Margaret Abercrombie, and a stylised map. The leaflet draws on Christine's knowledge of the area and research from published sources.
Knowledge and skills of local residents
Cllr Mitchell, Exeter City Council's Lead Councillor for Environment and Leisure, said "In the true spirit of the Living Here initiative, this leaflet harnesses the knowledge and skills of local residents to enhance appreciation of the area and produce something of lasting benefit. This leaflet will delight resident and visitor alike and I am sure that most people who follow the trail will be surprised by many of the historic details revealed. I hope this will inspire others to develop projects which help us all to appreciate the wonders of Exeter, west of the river."
The St Thomas local history trail has been funded through a small grant, as part Living Here... West of the Exe, one of the major initiatives in RAMM's Out and About programme of exhibitions and events during the refurbishment of the Museum building. It is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) with funding from Renaissance and support from Exeter City Council.
