A mystery cottage

An Alphington cottage
By Rowena Jay

This photograph is believed to be of an Alphington cottage, most probably no longer standing. The date of the picture is thought to be about 1880 and the actual photograph was found underneath the stage in Alphington's village hall. Thankfully, I did not have to venture into the dark and dusty depths to drag it out! Does any one have any records that name the cottage and the occupants please? Also, does any one know what is the piece of machinery in the foreground please?

If you can help please leave me a comment.

Horse Gin

The piece of machinery in the foreground was known as a 'Horse Gin' or 'Horse Ring'. Horses were attached at the end of the arms and walked round and round to provide power via cogs to machinery in adjacent barns or sometimes to lift water and coal from mines.
