My interview with my nan

Her exciting childhood
By Megan WETC

Name: Shirley Burchell (Nan)
Where were you born: Exeter , Regent Street.
How long have you lived west of The Exe: 74 years
What are some of the most important / special places for you west of The Exe and why? The Double Locks hotel where I grew up during the war and Alphington where I live now.
Did you go to school here? If so, what were your favourite lessons / teachers like? Yes. I didn't really have a favourite lesson. I was grateful for every bit of information I could get, considering it was during the war. The teachers were not as good as they are now.
What did you do in your free time? Where did you go? I stayed mainly at home. I did have an American pen friend and I collected autographed photos of film stars.
What are your most treasured memories of living here? Bringing up my family in a safe environment with friends around.
How has the area changed in your lifetime? Shopping is the biggest change. It used to be all small corner shops, not supermarkets and deliveries were made to your door by Milkmen, Bakers and Butchers.
What makes living her so special? The weather is better than the North and you are in easy reach of some lovely beaches and the Moors.
