Four St Thomas gentlemen in 1883:

Messrs Clogg, Bradshaw, Vanstone and Sandford
By Shirley Whittard

This photograph was taken on 17 August 1883.

The 1881 census gives the following information:

  • Mr J Clogg, Rope Maker, aged 54, living at 184 Cowick Street, St Thomas
  • Mr E Bradshaw, Aspjhalt contractor and employer of eight men [with works at Haven Banks], aged 47, living at Buddle Park House
  • Mr Robert Vanstone, age unknown, Nurseryman, unmarried and living with his father, also a nurseryman at 108 Foxhayes

J Clogg and E Bradshaw are two of my great-grandfathers.

Can anyone shed any light on Mr Sandford?
