Ramm's Veitch Collection
By Spring Cui
Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery (RAMM) houses the Veitch Collection, which contains a variety of souvenirs brought by the Veitch collectors. They collected not only plants, but also bits and pieces from where they travelled. These objects were often made by local people apart from the butterflies and bird skins.
The ownership of the souvenirs was often in doubt. The Veitch collectors collected plants for the firm of Veitch & Sons from other regions. Sometimes they stayed in the region longer than being told to collect artefacts, dried plants and butterflies on their own account then sold them out. Both Veitch & Sons and their collectors regard them as belonging to themselves.
