and a family connection to an Alphington baker
By Sarah, Curator of West Exe

Mr Pollard was born in Alphington in 1921. His father had the bakery and grandmother had the grocer's shop in Alphington. Mr Pollard has an unusual link with the Royal Albert Memorial Museum too.  Believe it or not his grandfather made a special window for Gerald (aka George) the Giraffe at RAMM.  Its head was too tall for the room where it was displayed and so he was brought in to cut a hole in the floor.

How old is this giraffe?

This specimen was shot in 1901 when it was a young adult male. In those days rich people didn't worry about hunting wild animals like this giraffe.
