A damp but such a happy day
By Rowena Jay
Saturday 6th June, the day of the Living Here, Alphington Old Residents Re-union Day may have started with an almighty clap of thunder, torrenial rain and me becoming soaked through to the skin on two occasions but it was nevertheless a hugh success.
Somewhere between 200 and 300 past residents arrived throughout the day, some had travelled in from neighbouring villages, Somerset, Plymouth and one chap even came from America!
The expressions on people's faces as they met up with old friends that they had not seen for 50 years was truly magical. So many visitors said that they had stayed many more hours than they had originally intended because they were meeting so many old friends. The good news is that many of these friends have promised to keep in touch now.
From e-mails I am receiving people went home and thought about the event for days afterwards as it had brought back so many very happy memories of carefree childhoods in Alphington Village.
There were hundreds of old photographs of Alphington and visitors sat down looking at these chatting about their memories of times gone by.
There were a wide variety of cakes, biscuits, savouries and fruit available all washed down with numerous cups of tea and coffee. I have never seen so many slices of Swiss roll disappear so fast!
I am so grateful to the Living Here website and RAMM for supporting this event for me, so many people were made so very happy. Thank you for helping me do this.
