Donated to RAMM by a lady in Alphington Road
By Sarah, Curator of West Exe
This pretty carriage parasol was donated to RAMM on 12 March 1935 by a lady who lived in Alphington Road. It has a paisley patterned cover made of a wool and silk fabric edged in cluny lace, and an ivory 'ferrule' (the point at the top). It was made by Sangsters of London in about 1860.
Paisley was a popular design at this time. It came to the UK through trade with Iran and India. The paisley represents the shape of a mango fruit.
