Alphington's Celebration of Community
By Rowena Jay

From Friday 2nd October until Sunday 4th October it was a very busy weekend at St. Michael and All Angels Church, Alphington. The Harvest of Life - A Celebration of Community event took place over this Harvest Festival weekend.

Many of Alphington's groups produced the most beautiful flower arrangements, which decorated almost every window of the Church. The darker corners were lit up with large bright arrangements in colours of red, yellow, cream and orange.

Through out Friday groups of village school children, totalling 180 children in all, visited the Church and made their own paper flowers, which were "planted" in the Church Yard. They also had a questionnaire to work on, teaching them a little about their Church.

Saturday was an open day with loads of activities and visitors were also entertained by the Cornelius Family during the afternoon.

Sunday was some what quieter with Harvest Festival Services taking place in the morning and evening. However, villagers had the afternoon to walk around the Church to view the flowers for the last time.

Through out the weekend a small display of old pictures of Alphington Church and a written history was on show. There was also a mini history trail.

All through the weekend tea, coffee and home-baked cakes were available, the ladies working in the "café" really did work very hard.

The event was a huge success and it was lovely to see the community come together.
