By Sarah, Curator of West Exe

Thomas Gray had the idea for a network of railways across England as long ago as 1820. His vision was not recognised during his lifetime. He died in poverty in a house in Alphington Road.

This portrait was painted in the last year of his life. It is held in the collections of the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery, Exeter. Read research into this portrait done by the Curator of Art at RAMM: Thomas Gray portrait
