Red silk velvet shoes from the 1760s
From the collections at RAMM, Accession No. 54-1973
donated by a lady from Alphington
By Sarah, Curator of West Exe
These red silk velvet shoes were donated to RAMM in 1973 by a lady who lived in Alphington. I wonder how she came to own them?
The shoes were made in the 1760s. They have a 'French' heel that is 8cm high. Shoes like these were designed to make the foot appear small and elegant. Of course they would have been very uncomfortable. Find out more about these shoes here: red shoes.
